This year’s Homelessness Week theme is “Homelessness Action Now” – because we already know what works. What we need now is action at the scale and urgency this crisis demands.
It’s a theme that resonates deeply with all of us at Emmanuel City Mission.
Every day we see firsthand the growing number of people who need support. We meet people who have lost their housing because of rising rents, relationship breakdowns, family violence, poor health or simply a series of circumstances that became impossible to overcome. Increasingly we’re meeting people who never imagined they would need to ask for help.
Homelessness isn’t someone else’s problem. It’s a challenge facing every community across Australia, and one that requires all of us to play a part.
Looking beyond the stereotype
When many people think about homelessness, they picture someone sleeping rough on a city footpath.
While rough sleeping is one form of homelessness, it’s only part of a much bigger picture.
Across Australia more than 122,000 people are experiencing homelessness on any given night. Many are staying in overcrowded housing, couch surfing with friends or family, living in cars or moving between temporary accommodation because they simply have nowhere else to go. Here in Queensland demand for homelessness services continues to rise as housing affordability and cost-of-living pressures place increasing pressure on individuals and families.
Behind every statistic is a person. A father trying to keep his family together. A young person with nowhere safe to stay. Someone escaping domestic violence. An older Australian who simply can’t afford the rent anymore.
Homelessness doesn’t discriminate and it often looks very different from what people expect.
What action looks like
At Emmanuel City Mission, we believe action starts with showing up.
Every morning our doors open to welcome people experiencing homelessness and hardship with dignity, compassion and practical support. We don’t ask people to earn our care. We simply meet them where they are and remind them that they matter.
These numbers are significant but they don’t tell the whole story.
Behind every meal is a conversation. Behind every shower is someone regaining confidence. Behind every load of washing is a person preparing for a job interview, reconnecting with family or simply feeling human again.
Sometimes the most powerful thing we can offer isn’t a service, it’s a place where someone is known by name, welcomed without judgement and reminded they belong.
That’s the kind of action that changes lives.
Turning generosity into lasting change
One of the greatest challenges for people experiencing homelessness isn’t just getting through the day, it’s finding somewhere safe to sleep at night.
That’s why opening our Night Sanctuary was such an important milestone for Emmanuel City Mission.
Night Sanctuary provides far more than a bed. It offers safety, rest and the opportunity to wake up with hope for tomorrow. For many of our visitors it’s the first time in a long time they’ve experienced a secure night’s sleep.
But from the beginning we knew one night each week wouldn’t be enough.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, and the overwhelming support behind Roby’s Walk for Homelessness, we’re now preparing to open a second Night Sanctuary service each week from October.
That means more people will have somewhere safe to sleep. More people will experience dignity instead of fear. More people will have the chance to begin rebuilding their lives.
For us, that’s exactly what Homelessness Action Now looks like.
It’s not waiting for someone else to solve the problem. It’s bringing people together to create practical, immediate change in our own community.
A community choosing action
Homelessness Week is an important reminder that raising awareness is only the first step.
Real change happens when people decide to do something.

Together we’re proving that change is possible when compassion is matched with action.
