Providing shelter in the storm

When Cyclone Alfred swept toward Brisbane as a Category 2 storm, there was fear in the air — especially for those without a roof over their head. But thanks to your compassion, Emmanuel City Mission became more than a refuge. It became a home.

Because of your support, we were able to open our doors for six consecutive nights, offering 24/7 shelter, safety, and warmth to those who would have otherwise faced the storm in tents, bus shelters, or on the streets.

During this emergency period, we saw record numbers:

  • Over 100 people slept safely overnight

  • Up to 450 visitors came through during the day for meals, shelter, and connection

For many, this was the first time in years they could sleep through the night — uninterrupted, safe, and warm.

I don’t know what I would’ve done if Emmanuel City Mission wasn’t here. For the first time in days, I slept through the night, warm and safe.

This organisation has helped so many in their time of need. Many of us here are broken, and this place has offered us safety and dignity. Here, we aren’t alone — we’re together and part of a community.

I was terrified about how I’d get through the storm. My home is a tent, and I didn’t know if it would hold up. Having somewhere safe to go, where I was welcomed with open arms, was an absolute blessing.

This Was Only Possible Because of You

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

To those who gave financially, donated food, bedding, toiletries, and clothing — your generosity was life-changing.
To the volunteers and staff who showed up night after night, tired but tireless — you are the heartbeat of ECM.

To the media outlets who helped us get the word out during a critical time — we are truly grateful:
