A lasting legacy

Mick McDade, a veteran in the charity sector, recently bid farewell to his role at Emmanuel City Mission after a transformative four years. His journey into philanthropy began in 1998, and ECM became the culminating chapter in his impactful career.

A trip down memory lane

In 2010, at the age of 50, Mick pursued a Master of Business, majoring in Philanthropy and Non-Profit studies. Initially considering the charity sector as a short-term adventure, Mick found himself drawn to the unique challenges and rewards it offered. About five years ago, he sought part-time work and serendipitously discovered ECM.

Memorable Moments and Impactful Initiatives

Throughout his tenure, Mick had an incredible and lasting impact on the day to day running of ECM. When reflecting back on his time, Mick’s most memorable moments were the first Christmas Festival in 2019 and the 2023 ECM Pilgrimage.

“Each were incredibly bold events and were true to the heart of who ECM is,” said Mick. Reflecting on his experiences, Mick emphasizes the importance of a collective spirit at ECM.

"I see it in action every day. There is a genuine love for each other, and this love is actioned by caring for, and serving each other."

Over the four years Mick served at ECM, he saw many profound changes, but most significantly was the significant shift in the gender dynamic at ECM. A surge in young female volunteers, largely driven by the challenges posed by COVID-19, increased the proportion of women at ECM, fostering positive change.

He observes, "Covid changed everything – we needed younger volunteers who were less vulnerable to Covid, and a whole new cohort of student volunteers stepped up."

ECM now sees larger numbers of women walking through the door every day, which has been a very positive change.

It is not goodbye, but see you later

As Mick bids farewell to his role, he cherishes the relationships and support he received during his time at ECM.

"Without doubt all of the people I have met and developed relationships with is what I will miss the most. ECM is all about people caring for each other, and I experienced this firsthand."

“I will also miss my daily chats with Roby – you are lucky to meet one Roby in a lifetime. I am a lucky man.”

Mick's journey at ECM stands as a testament to the transformative power of caring communities, leaving an indelible legacy that will continue to inspire and uplift those touched by his remarkable work.

We wish you all the best Mick in your retirement. Enjoy the fishing. 🎣
